spacerJune 20, 2014 // Newport-Bermuda Race

The Newport Bermuda Race is a 635-mile ocean race, much of it out of sight of land, usually lasting three to six days. It crosses a stretch of the Atlantic Ocean known for challenging weather, especially in the Gulf Stream, where there are strong currents.

Every two years in mid-June, more than 150 boats start from the historic seaport of Newport, Rhode Island. The fleet has five divisions to allow seaworthy boats of many sizes and types to be raced fairly and aggressively for an array of trophies awarded in Bermuda at an elegant ceremony at Government House, the residence of the governor of this tropical island.

In keeping with the 100-year traditions of amateur sailors and strong family spirit, most of the boats tend to have amateur crews comprised of friends and family members. The race maintains its international prestige through competitive fairness, an exemplary safety record, and a responsive race organization handled by the volunteer members of the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. Sailors everywhere dream of adding the Newport Bermuda Race to their life list of adventures.

Newport Shipyard is proud to once again partner with Goslings Rum to sponsor the Crew Party on Wednesday, June 18, 2014. We look forward to seeing all Newport Bermuda Race sailors this spring!

spacerJune 23-26, 2014 // Newport Charter Show

The Newport Charter Yacht Show is a showcase of luxury charter yachts alongside a display of ancillary goods and services for the charter industry. This four-day event is dedicated exclusively to yacht charter professionals—agents, owners, brokers and captains—in the dynamic, picturesque setting of Newport, Rhode Island. The Newport Charter Yacht Show is produced by Newport Exhibition Group (NEG), a division of Newport Harbor Corporation. NEG also produces the prestigious Newport International Boat Show taking place annually in September.

The core focus of this event pivots around a world-class display of luxury yachts (70’ – 200’+) available for Charter as well as the services and amenities available to support yachts and their crew. While vessels on display represent primarily the Charter Yacht industry, we also believe that the mix of on-land exhibitors offers value for the captains and crew, and enhances the experience for the potential Charter guest. Only exhibitors who fit within the positioning of the event and whose products and services complement the Charter Yacht lifestyle are invited to exhibit.

spacerOctober 4, 2014 // Sail for Hope

2014 marks the 14th running of Sail for Hope. In 2001, in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and in the skies over Pennsylvania, a few local sailing enthusiasts scrambled to organize a regatta to honor and support those affected.

The first Sail For Pride Regatta rallied over 180 boats and $110,000 designated for charities to support the NYFD firefighters, police and the victims of the attacks and their families. The display of patriotism and generosity on and off the water made a lasting impression in the sailing community.

After the inaugural year, the organizers retired the name Sail For Pride, but continued the event as Sail For Hope, reflecting the Rhode Island state motto and aimed at supporting local charities. Charities supported over the years have included RI Red Cross, Seamen's Church Institute, Newport Harbormaster's Emergency Equipment Fund, local public high school sailing teams, US Olympic Sailing Trials and many more, including a huge fund-raising year in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. To date, nearly $1,000,000 has been raised for various charities.

spacerApril 10-13, 2014 // Charleston Race Week

Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week is now in its 19th year. The regatta was established in 1996 by members of Charleston Ocean Racing Association (CORA). The event actually came into being when CORA’s officers opted to merge two area regattas into one – the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association’s PHRF Championships and the Charleston Palmetto Cup, a local championship event. That year, on the initial scratchsheet, there were 29 entrants.

The first few editions of Charleston Race Week, as the event was formerly known, took place during the summer. At the time, the roster was largely made up of teams from around Charleston, and occasionally from the Savannah, GA, and Wilmington, NC areas. In early part of the last decade, that began to change.

In 2006, Charleston Race Week drew entries from as far away as England, Canada, Michigan, and California, with more than 70 percent of the competitors arriving from out of town. The story was much the same in 2007 and 2008, with increased numbers of participants each year. The event has grown by an average of 15 percent in recent years and evolved to become the largest keelboat regatta in the Western Hemisphere.
